Last night I trotted out to the Scissor Sister concert at the Olympia theatre on St. Catherine Street. I didn’t really know what to expect as this is the first time I’ve ever seen them live. I’ve been a fan since they were taking their mama out, all the way back to 2004 but after last night, I realized what the hell I might have missed during the last 8 years.
The Sisters burst onto the stage with a roar from the crowd and that set the stage for the rest of the evening. As they plowed through song after song, all I could think about was how much energy they have, it was really incredible.
With a new album (Magic Hour) out, they interlaced songs from the record with a few of their hits like “Take Your Mama”, “Comfortably Numb” and of course “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin” which still manages to turn us all into lyrical hypocrites (everyone is dancing yet singing about not wanting to!!!). They closed out the show with “Horses” from their new album. This song is one of my favorites but the best performance of the entire night (IMHO) was “Let’s Have a Kiki”. It’s a great song, the crowd went crazy for it (anthem material) and the group had as much fun singing and dancing to it as we did. I dare you to look up the song on YouTube. You might find the best video ever.
If I had to sum up the concert in one word it would be energy. From the more reserved (understatement) members of the group to the more flamboyant BFFs Jake Shears (dressed as a matador for the first part of the show and then changed into a see through, electric blue jump suit for the end) and Ana Matronic (she made a guy give her the t-shirt off his own back; it had a cat on it with lasers coming out of its eyes so it was ok) the energy was high and it was easily transmitted to the audience and we were eating it up.
